Indigo Dye Workshop
October 13 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT
$50
This workshop allows you to dye up to 1 lb of yarn or fabric. Mihoko will prepare the indigo dye vat with pre-reduced indigo solution. It is true natural indigo. When it is mixed with chemicals to make the dye bath quickly. In order to get darker blue, you need to repeat few times of “dip and air dry” steps.
The magic of indigo is changing colors from green to blue while you oxidize the materials. Mihoko introduces this traditional art in SAORI way. It is a free-style dyeing. Have a great time to experiment and enjoy how things will come out. After dyeing, you need to set the color in a boiling water for 15min.
Mihoko will send you a video for you to prepare the materials to dye in advance. Please follow the instruction. In the video you will learn how to apply shibori (tie-dye) effect by using rubber band, clamps, clips, and so on, which makes interesting patterns.
You may dye t-shirts or scarves instead of yarn.
The fiber must be natural fiber such as cotton, rayon, bamboo, silk, and wool. Synthetic materials won’t get dyed.
You will share a 5 gallon bucket dye bath with others. Please respect people around you and be mindful for dripping. Everything which gets a drip would turn blue.
Please wear painters’ clothes, proper shoes, or an apron. Bring rubber gloves if you don’t want to wear used ones Mihoko has. Also, bring several plastic bags for your dyed materials to take home. You need to rinse the wet dyed material with water at home.
